Like so much in my music collection it starts with the Doctor Demento show. I no longer remember the first time I heard it, but I've purchased several of the Austin Lounge Lizards' albums since.
The reason this song strikes such a cord today in particular is that I had a doctor appointment a couple of days ago and the physician wants me to take a drug that I think I had a pretty bad reaction to. She didn't try to convince me that the reaction was a one time thing or that I'd get used to it, she just wanted me on the drug. I'm not taking it, but the next doctor I see I'll try to strike up some sort of meaningful conversation about the risks and trade offs of trying the drug again. Anyway, I had to listen to this tune to remind myself that the bottom line is that the drug companies and at least some of the doctors are only in it for the money.
